STMicroelectronics has announced STPMIC1 PMIC, which is a fully integrated Power-Management IC. It is designed as a companion chip for the STM32MP1 microprocessor and a general-purpose system power management solution. Power management plays a crucial role when dealing with analog and digital circuits. The usage of STPMIC1 IC reduces both space and BOM, by providing the same power-rail monitoring and protection, it also handles power-up/down sequencing and meets the ST32MP1 accuracy and settling-time specifications.  STPMIC1 consists of four DC/DC buck converters, a DC/DC boost converter, and six low-dropout regulators (LDOs) and satisfies the power demand for the highly integrated application-processor based systems. The STPMIC1 is capable of providing a DDR memory reference voltage, a 500mA USB OTG power switch, and a general-purpose power switch. An I2C interface and extra pins to allow the MPU to manage the PMIC.

To handle a wide range of operating conditions the four buck converts are designed to provide a fast transient response and precise output-voltage control. At low loads, the pulse-frequency modulation mode boosts the energy efficiency for low power loads. At normal operating conditions, with bypass-mode capability, the IC can power up to two USB ports and ensure smooth regulation even when operating from a battery or from a low-cost 5V AD/DC adaptor. Among the six LDO channels, one is featured for DDR3 termination and can operate in bypass mode for low-power DDR, while another provides automatic source detection to power a USB PHY. The remaining four LDOs are general-purpose outputs.
