Matrix LED Drivers for Automotive LCD Backlights with Enhanced Display Performance

ROHM has introduced a series of LED driver ICs, known as the BD94130xxx-M series (including models BD94130MUF-ME2 and BD94130EFV-ME2), specifically designed for automotive LCD backlights. The LED drivers aid Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and functionalities of car infotainment systems, allowing selective backlight shutdown in dark areas of the LCD. This improves display performance and reduces power consumption.

The BD94130xxx-M series of matrix LED drivers combines an 8-line switch controller with a 24-channel current driver, enabling control of up to 192 zones of mini-LED backlighting with just a single IC. Additionally, each mini-LED in a zone can be independently adjusted using the local dimming function, resulting in larger contrast ratios and lower power consumption for displays.

The BD94130xxx-M series features a 24-channel current driver integrated with a switch controller that can be divided into 8 lines. The number of switch controller lines can be selected from three patterns (4, 6, or 8) through register settings, providing flexibility to support various specifications based on the number of zones and LED current consumption. Furthermore, a built-in feedback control function ensures a constant feedback voltage independent of LED temperature characteristics, reducing thermal design efforts and minimizing loss ratios during operation.
