High-Accuracy Fuel-Gauge and Protection IC with Low Quiescent Current for Lithium-ion (Li+) Cells

MAX17320 Li-ion Fuel Gauge IC from Maxim Integrated
MAX17320 Li-ion Fuel Gauge IC from Maxim Integrated

Maxim Integrated has introduced MAX17320, a high-accuracy fuel-gauge and protection IC for 2 to 4 series Lithium-ion (Li+) cells (2S-4S). This newly introduced IC with Maxim Integrated’s patented ModelGauge m5 EZ algorithm delivers 40% more accurate state-of-charge (SOC) readings and 85% lower quiescent current (IQ) compared to its closest competitor. The fuel gauge has been designed to offer better safety in hand-held devices with 2S-4S Li+ batteries in computing, Internet of Things (IoT), power tool, consumer, healthcare, mobile devices, etc.

The MAX17320 IC warns the system and disables a leaky battery before a potentially hazardous outcome. It also allows fine-tuning of voltage and current thresholds based on various temperature zones. The ICs secondary protection scheme permanently disables the battery by assisting a secondary protector or blowing a fuse in severe fault conditions disables a leaky battery.

The MAX17320 enables the longest run-time and avoids a premature or sudden shutdown while delivering the most accurate SOC in the industry. The IC can run in an ultra-low-power mode enabling the system to read the SOC instantly as it wakes up without being disconnected from the battery cells during shipment or when stored on the shelf. The IC is available for purchase at $1.55 (1000-up, FOB USA) on the company website. The MAX17320X2EVKIT# evaluation kit is also available and it will cost you $89.
