Introduction to StepStick Protector

The StepStick Protector is an add on module for stepper motor drivers. It is compatible with StepStick and Pololu A4988 stepper motor drivers. This protector board has freewheeling diodes for the motor outputs, Freewheeling/ Flyback diode is a diode that is connected between the driver’s outputs and the driver power input pins to prevent the high voltage development across the pins, so this module also protects from induction voltages in the unpowered state of the driver.

The Protector module has an additional diode between the logic supply voltage (VIO) to the motor supply voltage (VM). So whenever the motor supply voltage (VM) is not present then it will not be able to enable the motor outputs because the current will be drawn from the logic supply VIO. Pinout and internal connections of Protector Board is shown in below image. As you can see in the diagram, total 8 diodes are connected between motor outputs and one diode is connected between VM and VIO to protect the stepper motor and driver module from high voltage.

How to Use StepStick Protector

You can directly plug this protector between your existing stepper driver and your electronic board. The StepStick protector is hardware/pin-compatible with DRV8825 and Pololu A4988 drivers. However, the Trinamic TMCxxxx drivers have different and more settings, which can be set via the CFG/MS pins. The direction is inverted on TMC2xxx SilentStepSticks (DIR pin inverted) and can be either changed in the software or by rotating the motor connector 180°.

Applications

  • Used to control the speed and rotation of stepper motor more efficiently.
  • It is used to protect the driver modules.
  • Used to eliminate the printed marks produced by 3-D printers.
